Savitribai Phule Pune University Marks Shahu Maharaj’s Birth Anniversary with Ideological Tribute
Pune,
Savitribai Phule Pune University observed the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj with an intellectually enriching lecture program, jointly organized by the Prashik Welfare Foundation and the University Student Struggle Action Committee. The event was held at C. V. Raman Hall, Department of Physics, and witnessed active participation from students, faculty, non-teaching staff, and representatives of various student organizations.

Former Additional District Collector, Hon. Punjabrao Wankhede, delivered the keynote address on the topic “Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj: Pillar of Social Democracy.” In his speech, he emphasized the importance of celebrating Shahu Maharaj’s legacy ideologically, as advocated by Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. He highlighted Shahu Maharaj’s commitment to social equality, inter-caste harmony, and educational empowerment of the Bahujan community.

Dr. Parag Kalkar, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University, graced the event as the Chief Guest and extended best wishes for the occasion. He encouraged student groups and academic institutions to remain student-centric in their approach and to draw inspiration from visionary reformers like Shahu Maharaj.

Prof. Dr. Vilas Adhav, Director of the Department of Lifelong Learning and Extension, presided over the session. In his presidential address, Dr. Adhav recalled Shahu Maharaj’s historic actions that challenged the rigid caste system, including promoting education among the marginalized and advocating for social reforms like remarriage and inter-caste marriage. He quoted Maharaj’s powerful statements at the 1920 Mangaon Conference, where he recognized Dr. B. R. Ambedkar as the future leader of India’s oppressed classes.
