The Department of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India, in partnership with the State Government of Uttar Pradesh organized a grand celebration of the International Day of Older Persons 2025 at the DIET Auditorium, Badaun, Uttar Pradesh. The event was graced by Sh. B.L. Verma, Hon’ble Union Minister of State, Social Justice & Empowerment, Sh. Mahesh Chandra Gupta, Hon’ble Member of Legislative Assembly, Badaun, Uttar Pradesh, Sh. Harish Shakya, Hon’ble Member of Legislative Assembly, Bilsi, Uttar Pradesh, Sh. Rajiv Kumar Singh, Hon’ble Member of Legislative Assembly, Dataganj, Uttar Pradesh, Sh. Vagish Pathak, Hon’ble Member of Legislative Council, Uttar Pradesh, senior officials, representatives of civil society, students and hundreds of elder citizens from across Uttar Pradesh.

The International Day of Older Persons, observed worldwide on 1st October, honors the vital role of senior citizens and underscores society’s duty to safeguard their well-being. In India, it serves as a key occasion to highlight progressive policies and initiatives that uphold the dignity, care, and empowerment of the elderly.

These programmes ensure holistic support for senior citizens through various services, financial assistance, Elderline 14567 helpline, awareness campaigns, and intergenerational activities. The celebration in Jabalpur highlighted these commitments by combining policy outreach, cultural awareness, and citizen participation.

  • Planting of Tree under ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’
  • Children’s Cultural Performances by the school students.
  • Nukkad Natak by Ashmita Group (NSD), spreading awareness on dignity and rights of senior citizens.
  • Felicitation Ceremony of winner students of various competitions centered on the theme of Ageing with Dignity.
  • Sankalp – Pledge administered by Sh. B.L Verma Hon’ble Union Minister of State, reaffirming collective responsibility towards elder care.
  • Token distribution to the beneficiaries under Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana (RVY).
  • Walkathon – Elders and children led by Sh. B.L Verma Hon’ble Minister of State (Social Justice & Empowerment) walked together while holding hands to spread message of intergenerational bonding between the generations.

Sh. B.L Verma, Hon’ble Union Minister of State(Social Justice and Empowerment) highlighted the importance of senior citizens in the society, the role they play in family system and the requirement to deal with the elderly issues promptly.He highlighted the various recent initiatives taken by the Department for the holistic wellbeing of the senior citizens such as launch of senior citizens welfare portal, organization of camps under Rashtriya Vayoshri Yojana, Opening of Pradhan Mantri Divyasha Kendras and running of Elderline.
