The Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shri Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the Curtain Raiser Ceremony of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the\u00a0New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA)<\/em>\u00a0at Bharat Mandapam today.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

To mark the milestone, the minister launched eight major maritime development projects aimed at boosting India\u2019s port infrastructure, logistics efficiency, and sustainability. The projects include a state-of-the-art cruise terminal, modern covered storage facilities, a 150-bed multi-speciality hospital, expanded truck terminals, and upgraded port access infrastructure designed to improve user experience and operational capacity.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Shri Sarbananda Sonowal also launched a commemorative postal stamp, a commemorative coin, and the official Golden Jubilee Anthem of NMPA to celebrate the port\u2019s five decades of contribution to India\u2019s maritime trade and regional growth.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking on the occasion, the Shri Sonowal said,\u00a0\u201cToday marks a momentous milestone for all of us. The New Mangalore Port, our ninth major port established in 1975, has evolved into a key hub for importers and exporters in the region. From handling just a few thousand tonnes of cargo in its early years, it has grown to handle 46.01 million tonnes in the last financial year, with a total capacity of 104 million tonnes per annum. A new deep-draft general cargo berth is also under construction and will commence operations soon.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Reflecting on India\u2019s long-term goals, he added,\u00a0\u201cAs we move towards \u2018Viksit Bharat 2047\u2019 under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji, our ports will play a crucial role in achieving the target of making India a $30 trillion economy. To become a \u2018Viksit Bharat\u2019 and \u2018Atmanirbhar Bharat\u2019, we must also become a Viksit Atmanirbhar Maritime Nation by 2047.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The Ports Minister underscored the need for sustainable and environmentally responsible growth, commending NMPA\u2019s efforts toward green operations.\u00a0\u201cThe economy should not grow at the cost of ecology and environment. The green initiatives undertaken by NMPA are commendable. The port has embraced sustainability as a guiding principle and continues to integrate environmentally conscious practices in its operations,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>Shri Sonowal said.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The Minister highlighted that India\u2019s ports are transforming into smart, sustainable, and technology-driven gateways in line with global standards. Initiatives such as the \u2018Harit Sagar Guidelines\u2019<\/em>, \u2018Green Tug Transition Programme’<\/em>, \u2018Harit Nauka Scheme\u2019<\/em>, and ‘Green Shipping Corridors\u2019<\/em>\u00a0are accelerating India\u2019s transition toward a clean-fuel, electric-vessel, and green maritime ecosystem.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Recounting a decade of transformation in the maritime sector, the minister said India has made\u00a0\u201cunprecedented progress\u201d<\/em>\u00a0under Prime Minister Modi\u2019s leadership. The\u00a0Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047<\/em>, aligned with the principles of the Blue Economy, charts a long-term roadmap to strengthen India\u2019s maritime capabilities, with planned investments of \u20b980 lakh crore projected to generate millions of jobs through the\u00a0Sagarmala Programme<\/em>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Under\u00a0Sagarmala<\/em>, 840 projects worth \u20b95.8 lakh crore are being implemented by 2035. Of these, 272 projects worth \u20b91.41 lakh crore have been completed, while 217 projects worth \u20b91.65 lakh crore are currently underway.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The eight new projects launched under NMPA include:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Construction of two covered storage sheds (14,000 MT capacity, pre-engineered design)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Construction of a dedicated cruise gate for international tourists<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Modification of KK Gate entrance and exit with RFID-enabled cargo handling, Customs, and CISF facilities<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Expansion of truck parking terminal (Customs House) with a capacity for 50\u201380 trucks per day<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Construction of PQC roads at MDL Yard (675 meters, with drainage facilities)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Development of truck parking terminal at Baikampady (20,000 sq. m., capacity for 180\u2013200 trucks)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Establishment of a 150-bed multi-speciality hospital under PPP mode with an investment of \u20b9107 crore<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Launch of a dedicated medical app for beneficiaries<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The Golden Jubilee of NMPA will be celebrated later this year, marking 50 years of the port\u2019s role in advancing India\u2019s maritime trade and regional development.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The event was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, including R. Lakshmanan, Joint Secretary (Ports), and Dr. Venkata Ramana Akkaraju, Chairman, New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA), along with other senior officials as well as dignitaries.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
