Branded (generic) medicines are often sold at significantly higher prices than their unbranded generic equivalents, even though they have the same therapeutic value.\u00a0 Addressing this disparity requires consistent policy intervention to reduce treatment costs and safeguard access to essential medicines, particularly for economically vulnerable populations.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>A significant initiative in this direction was the launch of the\u00a0Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP). As part of the week-long programme, health check-up camps were organised from 1 to 5 March 2026 at over 250 locations across the country\u00a0by the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI)\u00a0under the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Aligned with this year\u2019s theme,\u00a0<em>\u201cJanaushadhi Sasti Bhi, Bharosemand Bhi, Sehat Ki Baat, Bachat Ke Saath,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0the initiative combines on-site diagnostic services with public engagement activities to enhance awareness about the availability of affordable, quality-assured generic medicines at JAKs.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Quality Assurance of Medicines under PMBJP<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Medicines supplied under PMBJP are procured exclusively from manufacturers compliant with the\u00a0World Health Organization\u2019s Good Manufacturing Practices (WHO-GMP), thereby ensuring adherence to internationally recognised quality standards. Each batch undergoes rigorous testing at laboratories accredited by the\u00a0National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL).\u00a0Distribution to\u00a0<em>Jan Aushadhi Kendras\u00a0<\/em>is undertaken only after the medicines conform to prescribed quality parameters.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Widening the Footprint of Affordable Medicines Across India<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Under the scheme, over\u00a018000 Jan Aushadhi Kendras (JAKs)\u00a0are operational.\u00a0The scheme\u2019s product portfolio includes\u00a02,110 medicines, 315 surgical items,\u00a0medical consumables, and devices spanning 29 therapeutic categories, including anti-infectives, anti-diabetics, cardiovascular drugs, anti-cancer medications, and gastrointestinal treatments. On average, about\u00a010 to 12 lakh persons\u00a0visit these Kendras daily and avail\u00a0quality medicines\u00a0at affordable prices across the country, including in rural and remote areas.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.pib.gov.in\/WriteReadData\/userfiles\/image\/image003BZER.jpg\" \/><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Notably, the maximum retail prices (MRPs) of medicines available under the PMBJP are generally\u00a050-80%\u00a0lower than those of comparable branded medicines, significantly reducing rural households\u2019 healthcare expenditure. By June 2025, Jan Aushadhi medicines with an aggregate MRP value of\u00a0\u20b97,700 crore\u00a0have been sold, generating estimated savings of approximately\u00a0\u20b938,000 crore\u00a0for citizens relative to equivalent branded alternatives.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Franchise-Based Expansion of the Janaushadhi Kendras (JAKs)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>The Government has set a target to\u00a0open 25,000 JAKs\u00a0under the scheme by March 2027. To achieve this target, a franchise-based model has been adopted. Online applications are invited from\u00a0individual entrepreneurs, non-governmental organisations, societies, trusts, firms,\u00a0and\u00a0private entities\u00a0through the official portal of the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI),\u00a0<a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.janaushadhi.gov.in\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.janaushadhi.gov.in<\/a>. This inclusive framework supports the establishment of JAKs across urban, rural, and remote areas, including blocks and tehsils, helping to ensure wider access to affordable, quality-assured generic medicines for all.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Citizen-Centric Initiative: Janaushadhi Suvidha Sanitary Napkin<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static.pib.gov.in\/WriteReadData\/userfiles\/image\/image004M62X.jpg\" \/>The PMBJP has introduced several citizen-centric initiatives to improve accessibility, affordability, and awareness in healthcare delivery. The Janaushadhi\u00a0Suvidha Oxo-biodegradable Sanitary Napkins\u00a0is one key initiative, introduced in 2019, to\u00a0enhance affordable access to menstrual hygiene products\u00a0for women across India. Priced at a\u00a0highly subsidized rate of \u20b91 per pad,\u00a0the initiative aims to\u00a0reduce financial barriers\u00a0to safe menstrual practices. The napkins incorporate an Oxo-biodegradable additive that facilitates degradation upon exposure to oxygen after disposal, supporting\u00a0environmentally responsible consumption.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Aligned with the principles of\u00a0hygiene, health,\u00a0and\u00a0accessibility, the initiative particularly benefits economically vulnerable women. In addition, nutraceutical products such as protein powders, malt-based food supplements, and glucometers have been introduced to\u00a0diversify offerings and improve store viability.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Integration with Public Health Infrastructure:\u00a0State Health Departments and other authorities are encouraged to facilitate the\u00a0opening of JAKs within government hospitals\u00a0by providing rent-free premises, thereby\u00a0increasing accessibility and footfall.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Performance-Linked Stocking Norms:\u00a0A minimum stocking requirement mandates that\u00a0Kendras maintain at least 200 fast-moving medicines\u00a0to qualify for incentives, ensuring\u00a0consistent availability of essential drugs.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Cooperative Sector Participation:\u00a0Primary Agricultural Credit Societies\u00a0(PACS)\u00a0can leverage their widespread rural network of over\u00a013 crores small and marginal farmers\u00a0and their existing infrastructure, such as land, buildings, and storage facilities, to establish and operate Jan Aushadhi Kendras. This allows them to serve as\u00a0affordable medicine hubs\u00a0in remote areas where access to such medicine is limited. Established trust in PACS and its relationship with rural populations further helps ensure the success of these Kendras.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>JAKs at Railways Stations<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Under the scheme, a total of\u00a0116 JAKs\u00a0have been established at railway stations across the country as of\u00a031 January 2026. This initiative seeks to enhance accessibility by ensuring the availability of quality, affordable medicines to the public, including migrant workers and low-income travelers, at the railway station. Their presence at high-footfall transit hubs enhances last-mile accessibility and promotes timely access to essential medicines at reduced prices.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Institutional and Regulatory Requirements for Establishing a PMBJK Outlet<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Individuals holding a\u00a0D. Pharma or B. Pharma\u00a0qualification, as well as individuals\/organizations employing a qualified pharmacist, are eligible to establish a JAKs. The principal eligibility criteria and procedural requirements for applying and setting up such an outlet are as follows:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Minimum space:\u00a0120 square feet.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Pharmacist registration:\u00a0The pharmacist must be registered with the State Pharmacy Council in the State in which they practice.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Category-specific documentation:\u00a0Submission of a suitable certificate\/proof issued by the concerned authority for applicants belonging to the\u00a0Divyangjan, SC, or ST category.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Promoting Inclusive Entrepreneurship through Financial Incentives<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Under the\u00a0PMBJK, a structured incentive approach supports the financial viability and operational sustainability for Kendra operators. Operators receive a\u00a020% trade margin\u00a0on the MRP of each drug (excluding taxes).\u00a0They are also eligible for\u00a0performance-linked monthly incentives\u00a0up to a prescribed limit. An amount of\u00a0Rs. 2.00 lakhs\u00a0in addition to normal incentives as applicable is to be given to the above-mentioned entrepreneurs as mentioned below:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>1.50 lakh\u00a0reimbursement of furniture and fixtures<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>0.50 lakh\u00a0as reimbursement for Computer, internet, printer, scanner, etc.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>This will be a one-time grant for the opening of a new PMBJK, subject to the submission of original bills and restricted to the actual expenditure incurred.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Normal Incentive<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>PMBJKs run by entrepreneurs, pharmacists, NGOs, and charitable organisations linked with the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI) are eligible for incentives of up to \u20b95.00 lakh. The incentive is provided at 20% of monthly purchases, subject to a maximum of\u00a0\u20b920,000 per month\u00a0and compliance with stocking requirements.
