Government of India highlights rural transformation and development leadership at IFAD\u2013India Day in Rome<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

The Government of India showcased the country\u2019s pioneering achievements in rural development, women\u2019s empowerment and climate-resilient agriculture at the\u00a0IFAD\u2013India Day\u00a0event held in Rome. The occasion marked the celebration of India\u2019s long-standing and successful partnership with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

IFAD President Mr. Alvaro Lario commended India\u2019s leadership in driving scalable, community-led rural transformation and noted that several India\u2013IFAD initiatives have become global reference models.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Addressing the gathering,\u00a0Ms. Anu Mathai, Additional Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs (DEA), Ministry of Finance, and India\u2019s Alternate Governor to IFAD, underlined that India\u2019s development cooperation with IFAD is grounded in shared values of inclusivity, sustainability and community-led growth.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\u201cIndia\u2019s partnership with IFAD extends beyond financing. It is anchored in a common vision that places rural communities at the heart of development. IFAD has been a consistent and trusted partner in enabling India to scale innovative, equitable and sustainable rural livelihood models,\u201d she stated.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Over the past\u00a048 years, India and IFAD have together supported\u00a036 rural development projects\u00a0with a total value of\u00a0US$4.4 billion, including\u00a0US$1.5 billion contributed directly by IFAD. With\u00a0six ongoing projects\u00a0amounting to\u00a0US$459 million, India currently maintains a\u00a0co-financing ratio of 2.65, significantly higher than global averages, reflecting India\u2019s strong ownership and confidence in the partnership.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Flagship initiatives supported under the India\u2013IFAD portfolio include:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

\u2022 Enhancing\u00a0market access for over 45,000 rural enterprises\u00a0in Meghalaya.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Expanding\u00a0women\u2019s employability and income-generation opportunities\u00a0in Maharashtra.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Improving\u00a0climate resilience for 300,000 small and marginal farmers\u00a0in Jammu & Kashmir.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Supporting\u00a0income enhancement and migration reduction\u00a0efforts in Uttarakhand.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

India\u2019s globally recognised model of\u00a0women\u2019s collectives, which has evolved from small savings groups into robust economic institutions, was highlighted as a key example of community-driven transformation with global relevance.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Speaking at the event,\u00a0Dr. Jujjavarapu Balaji, Alternate Permanent Representative of India to IFAD, noted that India remains committed to advancing its partnership with IFAD. \u201cWe look forward to continued collaboration to scale up successful approaches and equip rural communities to respond effectively to emerging challenges,\u201d he said.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

As a founding member of IFAD and one of its largest contributors and development partners, India continues to play a leading role in\u00a0South\u2013South and Triangular Cooperation, sharing its expertise in rural institution-building, value-chain development and climate-smart agriculture with countries across the Global South.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
