The last Fireside Chat for the 56th<\/sup>\u00a0edition of International Film Festival of India (IFFI) titled, \u201cThe Narrative Architect of Social Transformation and Inclusivity\u201d got fired up when noted actor and filmmaker Aamir Khan entered into a fully-packed and applauding Kala Academy.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Session moderator acclaimed film critic Baradwaj Rangan began the session paying tribute to the legendary actor Dharmendra. Aamir reflected upon, \u201cI grew up watching Dharamji. Though hailed as the He-Man of Indian cinema, he was equally brilliant in all genres including, romance, comedy and drama; an actor of remarkable range and presence. He was a gentle giant and finest actor. His mastery of language, innate dignity and extraordinary range as an artist made him an institution in himself. His passing is a profound personal and artistic loss.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

And then gradually \u2018the Aamir Khan show\u2019 got unfurled for next one and half hour; started with the depiction of how his journey has always been rooted in his lifelong love for stories. He accepted that from childhood, he was captivated by the tales his grandmother told and the magic of Hawa Mahal on the radio\u2014formative moments that shaped his creative instincts. \u201cI\u2019ve always been drawn to stories. They were a big part of my childhood, and that fascination has guided every choice I\u2019ve made as an actor,\u201d he reminisced. \u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The man of perfection illustrated in his distinct style how his approach to cinema has never been calculative; it has always been instinctive: \u201cI can\u2019t repeat myself. Once I\u2019ve done a certain kind of film, I want to move on. I look for stories that feel fresh, unique, and creatively exciting.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

He shedded some more light on his instinct-driven approach to cinema. He reiterated that while many in the industry try to predict trends\u2014shifting between action, comedy, or whatever is performing at the box office\u2014he has never worked that way. \u201cI choose films purely based on my emotional excitement for the story, even if it goes completely against the norm,\u201d he said. \u201cMost of my decisions have been impractical by industry standards. When we made Lagaan, even Javed Saab advised us not to. By all logic, I shouldn\u2019t have become a star\u2014I broke every rule. But somehow, those unconventional choices connected with people and I\u2019m deeply grateful,\u201d he added.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Aamir noted that his film choices are driven purely by instinct. \u201cI never select a film thinking about which social topic to address next. I only look for scripts that excite me. If a great script carries a social message, that\u2019s a bonus\u2014not the starting point,\u201d he added.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Reflecting on the socially resonant themes in many of his films, Aamir added, \u201cIt may seem intentional, but it wasn\u2019t. Those stories came to me naturally. Perhaps it\u2019s the kind of material I connect with, and perhaps I\u2019ve been fortunate to receive exceptional scripts.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

He whole-heartedly credited the writers behind his landmark films: \u201cWhether it\u2019s Taare Zameen Par, 3 Idiots, Dangal, or Laapataa Ladies, the foundation was laid by the writers. They created the worlds and the characters\u2014I simply gravitated toward scripts that moved me.\u201d Looking back, the versatile actor added, \u201cmany of my films address social issues, but that happened organically, not by design.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI am a complete film personality, not an activist. My primary objective is to entertain my audience\u201d, he concluded with brute honesty.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

On a major note, Aamir Khan also revealed his upcoming plans, saying, \u201cOnce I complete the current slate of projects I\u2019ve produced\u2014Lahore 1947, Happy Patel, and a few others\u2014the work on all of them will wrap in the next few months. After that, I\u2019m shifting my focus entirely back to acting from production.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

He announced a major structural change from the stage: \u201cFrom here on, any script I hear will be only for me as an actor. It\u2019s a significant shift, but the right time to dedicate myself fully to acting again.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

On what comes next, Aamir added, \u201cI\u2019m listening to new scripts now. Several have excited me\u2014two or three in particular\u2014but I\u2019m still in the process of choosing.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

When Mr. Rangan asked him, \u201cIf any filmmakers in the audience want to pitch a project to you, how should they approach\u201d, to which Aamir answered back straightway, \u201cThey can simply reach out to my manager and request time for a narration or send the script across. Sometimes I prefer reading a script, and sometimes I prefer hearing it\u2014so either approach works.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The fiery fireside chat came to a conclusion with Aamir Khan\u2019s predictions on his directorial journey, \u201cDirection is actually my big love. Filmmaking is what I enjoy the most. I did direct once, but that was more out of a crisis\u2014so it doesn\u2019t really count as a planned move. But the day I consciously decide to take up direction, I\u2019ll probably stop acting, because it will consume me completely. That\u2019s why I\u2019m delaying that decision for now.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
