The Indian Navy is poised to enhance its hydrographic survey capabilities with the commissioning of\u00a0Ikshak<\/em>, the third vessel of the Survey Vessel (Large) [SVL] class and the\u00a0first\u00a0to be based at the Southern Naval Command. The ship will be formally commissioned into service in presence of Adm Dinesh K Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff, at a ceremony at\u00a0Naval Base, Kochi on 06 Nov 2025.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd., Kolkata,\u00a0Ikshak<\/em>\u00a0stands as a shining example of India\u2019s growing self-reliance in shipbuilding. The vessel embodies\u00a0over 80% indigenous content,\u00a0reflecting the success of the\u00a0Aatmanirbhar Bharat<\/em>\u00a0initiative and collaborative synergy between GRSE and Indian Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The name\u00a0\u2018Ikshak\u2019,<\/em>\u00a0meaning \u2018Guide\u2019 in Sanskrit,\u00a0aptly defines the ship\u2019s role as\u00a0a sentinel of precision and purpose.\u00a0The vessel is designed to undertake full-scale coastal and deep-water hydrographic surveys of ports, harbours, and navigational channels. The data generated will be vital for ensuring safe navigation at sea, strengthening India\u2019s maritime safety framework.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Equipped with state-of-the-art hydrographic and oceanographic equipment, including a\u00a0high-resolution multi-beam echo sounder, Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV), and four Survey Motor Boats (SMBs),\u00a0Ikshak<\/em>\u00a0brings unmatched versatility and capability to the Navy\u2019s hydrographic fleet. The ship is also fitted with\u00a0a helicopter deck, extending its operational reach and enabling multi-domain missions.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The commissioning of\u00a0Ikshak<\/em>\u00a0marks a significant milestone in the Indian Navy\u2019s ongoing efforts to augment its survey and charting infrastructure. As a symbol of indigenous strength, technical excellence and maritime stewardship,\u00a0Ikshak<\/em>\u00a0is ready to serve the nation \u2014 charting the unknown and safeguarding India\u2019s vast maritime frontiers.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
