    Introduction<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    The\u00a0National Beekeeping and Honey Mission (NBHM)\u00a0is a\u00a0Central Sector Scheme\u00a0launched by the Government of India for the\u00a0overall promotion and development of scientific beekeeping\u00a0and the\u00a0production of quality honey and other beehive products. Implemented through the\u00a0National Bee Board (NBB), the scheme was announced under the banner of\u00a0Atmanirbhar Bharat\u00a0with a total budget outlay of\u00a0\u20b9500 crore for three years (FY 2020\u201321 to 2022\u201323). It has since been\u00a0extended for another three years (FY 2023\u201324 to 2025\u201326)\u00a0with a\u00a0remaining budget of \u20b9370 crore\u00a0from the original allocation.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    Beekeeping, an\u00a0agro-based activity\u00a0undertaken by farmers and landless labourers in rural areas, forms an integral part of the\u00a0Integrated Farming System. It plays a crucial role in\u00a0pollination, thereby enhancing\u00a0crop yields\u00a0and\u00a0farmers\u2019 income\u00a0while providing\u00a0honey and other high-value beehive products\u00a0such as beeswax, bee pollen, propolis, royal jelly, bee venom, etc., all of which serve as important sources of livelihood for rural communities.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    Integrated farming\u00a0(or integrated agriculture) is a commonly and broadly used word to explain a more integrated approach to farming as compared to existing monoculture approaches.\u00a0It refers to agricultural systems that integrate livestock, fisheries, crop production, horticulture, etc.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    India\u2019s\u00a0diverse agro-climatic conditions\u00a0offer vast potential for\u00a0beekeeping, honey production, and export. Recognizing its importance in rural development and agricultural sustainability, the Government of India launched the\u00a0NBHM\u00a0as part of the\u00a0\u201cSweet Revolution\u201d, an ambitious initiative aimed at promoting apiculture to\u00a0accelerate the production of quality honey\u00a0and\u00a0boost farmers\u2019 income\u00a0through scientific and organized beekeeping.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    Sub Schemes under NBHM<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    The NBHM is being implemented through\u00a03 Mini Missions\u00a0(MMs) – MM-I, MM-II & MM- III:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Mini Mission-I:\u00a0Under this Mission, thrust will be given on\u00a0production & productivity improvement\u00a0of various crops through pollination assisted by\u00a0adoption of scientific beekeeping;<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n
    2. Mini Mission-II:\u00a0This Mission will concentrate on\u00a0post-harvest management of beekeeping\/beehive products\u00a0including collection, processing, storage, marketing, value addition, etc. with a thrust to\u00a0develop requisite infrastructural facilities\u00a0for these activities; and<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n
    3. Mini Mission-III:\u00a0This Mission will concentrate on\u00a0research & technology generation\u00a0for different regions\/states\/agro-climatic and socio-economic conditions.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Objectives of NBHM<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

      The main objectives of NBHM are:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        \n
      1. Promoting holistic growth of beekeeping industry\u00a0for income & employment generation, providing livelihood support to farm and non-farm households and to enhance agriculture\/ horticulture production;<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n
      2. Developing additional infrastructural facilities\u00a0for developing quality nucleus stock of honeybees, multiplication of stock by bee breeders and post-harvest and marketing infrastructures, including honey processing plants, storages\/cold storages, collection, branding, marketing centre, etc.;<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n
      3. Setting up of state-of-the-art Quality Control Labs for testing of honey & other beehive products\u00a0at regional levels and\u00a0Mini\/Satellite Labs\u00a0at district levels in main honey producing districts\/states;<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n
      4. To develop blockchain\/ traceability system\u00a0for traceability of source of honey & other beehive products and using IT tools in beekeeping, including online registration, etc.;<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n
      5. To develop and facilitate Honey Corridors\u00a0in potential areas;<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n
      6. To promote agri-entrepreneurs & agri-startups\u00a0for their involvement in beekeeping\/honey production;<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n
      7. To promote trade-agreements\u00a0between beekeepers & traders\/honey processors\/exporters, etc.;<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n
      8. To promote, develop and disseminate latest technologies and skill development in beekeeping industry\u00a0for production of honey & other high value beehive products;<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n
      9. Empowerment of women\u00a0through beekeeping;<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n
      10. To maximize, economic, ecological and social benefits by diversification through beekeeping\u00a0by production of higher quantity and good quality of honey and other high value beehive products for domestic and export market; and<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n
      11. To strengthen beekeepers by developing institutional framework\u00a0through collective approach like formation of Self-Help Groups\/Farmer Producer Organizations\/Beekeepers Cooperatives\/Federations, etc.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Progress and Achievements of NBHM<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

        In Marketing Year 2024 (January to December), India produced approx. 1.4 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of natural honey.\u00a0Further, the government has made several efforts to ensure the progress of NBHM:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

          \n
        1. 6 world class Honey Testing Labs,\u00a047 Mini Honey Testing Labs,\u00a06 Disease Diagnostic Labs,\u00a08 Custom Hiring centres,\u00a026 Honey Processing Units,\u00a012 Beekeeping Equipment’s Unit,\u00a018 Collection-Branding\u00a0&\u00a0Marketing Units, 10 Packaging and Cold storage\u00a0have been sanctioned under NBHM till March 2025.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n
        2. 424 hectares\u00a0of land has been covered as\u00a0Technology Demonstration on Beekeeping\u00a0and\u00a0288 hectares\u00a0as\u00a0Plantations of Bee friendly Flora\u00a0under the sanctioned projects of NBHM. Also,\u00a0167 activities\u00a0have been sanctioned for\u00a0empowerment of women\u00a0by bringing SHGs under NBHM in various states.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n
        3. A\u00a0National Centre of Excellence\u00a0in\u00a0Beekeeping\u00a0has been sanctioned at\u00a0IIT, Roorkee.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n
        4. As per the demand of beekeeping sector\u00a0Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA)\u00a0imposed\u00a0Minimum Export Price (MEP)\u00a0of\u00a0US $ 2,000 (Rs. 1.67 lakh) per metric ton (PMT),\u00a0i.e.,\u00a0<\/em>Rs. 167.10 per Kg\u00a0for honey. The announced MEP was imposed till December 31, 2024.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n
        5. The\u00a0Madhukranti portal\u00a0has been launched for\u00a0online registration\u00a0and\u00a0traceability\u00a0of source of honey and other bee products. About\u00a014,859 Beekeepers, 269 Beekeeping and Honey Societies, 150 Firms and 206 Companies\u00a0have been registered with NBB on Madhukranti portal, as of October 14, 2025.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n
        6. Under NBHM,\u00a0formation of 10,000 FPOs, 100 FPOs of Beekeepers\/Honey Producers are allotted\u00a0to TRIFED (14), NAFED (60) and NDDB (26) for implementation of activities under NBHM. Out of total 100 FPOs allotted to NBB,\u00a097 FPOs of Beekeepers\/ Honey Producers have been registered\/formed\u00a0till March 2025.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n
        7. As of March 2025, a total of\u00a0298 registered producers\u00a0has been benefitted by the provisions of NBHM.<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Export of Natural Honey from India<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

          India exports a variety of natural honey like Rapeseed\/Mustard Honey, Eucalyptus Honey, Lychee Honey, Sunflower Honey, etc. Major Indian states producing honey are:\u00a0Uttar Pradesh (17%), West Bengal (16%), Punjab (14%), Bihar (12%) and Rajasthan (9%).<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

          India exported around\u00a01.07 lakh metric tonnes (MT)\u00a0of natural honey worth\u00a0USD 177.52 million\u00a0in\u00a0FY 2023-24. This is a commendable rise in exports since FY 2020-21 when India exported 59,999 MT of natural honey worth USD 96.77 million.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

          Major export destinations\u00a0included\u00a0U.S.A, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Libya.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

          As per the\u00a0July 2025 Monthly Dashboard for Honey,\u00a0prepared jointly by the\u00a0Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA)\u00a0and Crisil, globally, India is the\u00a0second largest exporter of honey, after China, as of marketing year 2024, up from the 9th<\/sup>\u00a0rank in 2020.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

          National Bee Board (NBB)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

          National Bee Board\u00a0was registered as a society under Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860, on\u00a0July 19, 2000,\u00a0and was\u00a0reconstituted\u00a0under the Chairmanship of Secretary (A&C) in\u00a0June, 2006. The main objective of NBB is overall development, promotion of scientific beekeeping in the country to increase the productivity of crops through pollination and increase the honey production for increasing the income of the beekeepers\/farmers. NBB has been designated\/recognized as\u00a0Nodal Agency\u00a0for overall development\/promotion of scientific beekeeping in the country. The scheme NBHM is being implemented by NBB.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

          Success Stories of Beekeeping from Rural India<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

          In\u00a0Nongthymmai\u00a0village of\u00a0Meghalaya, beekeeping has long been a\u00a0traditional practice,\u00a0believed to bring health and vitality to households. Once a hobby, it has now become a\u00a0key source of income\u00a0for many families.\u00a0Shri Stevenson Shadap, who began beekeeping out of passion, transformed it into a\u00a0profitable venture\u00a0after receiving training through the\u00a0Umsning Enterprise Facilitation Centre (EFC). By expanding his bee colonies and improving production and packaging, he now earns between\u00a0\u20b91 to 2 lakhs annually from honey sales\u00a0in\u00a0Nongpoh\u00a0and\u00a0Shillong markets, with demand exceeding supply. The community, inspired by his success, is\u00a0forming a beekeepers\u2019 society\u00a0to enhance collective honey production, packaging, marketing, and develop value-added products. Shri Shadap remains optimistic that the\u00a0Meghalaya\u2019s Apiculture Mission\u00a0will help them reach larger markets and sustain this generational livelihood.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

          \n

          In\u00a0Kupwara\u00a0district of\u00a0Jammu and Kashmir, beekeeping has emerged as a major\u00a0income diversification initiative\u00a0through both administrative support and individual enterprise. The government has promoted the rearing of\u00a0Apis mellifera<\/em>\u00a0bees\u00a0by providing\u00a02,000 colonies to new beekeepers at a 40% subsidy and establishing a \u20b925 lakh Honey Processing and Bottling Plant at Gulgam with a daily capacity of 2 quintals, branding the produce as \u201cKupwara Honey\u201d for wider markets. Local youth like\u00a0Zakir Hussain Bhat, who began with\u00a0five colonies, now manage\u00a0over 200 colonies producing 200 quintals of honey annually and employing others. Supported by training from the government and infrastructure,\u00a0over 500 farmers\u00a0now produce\u00a0480 quintals of organic honey\u00a0annually, generating\u00a0\u20b93 crore\u00a0in turnover. Plans for\u00a0GI tagging of \u201cKupwara Organic Honey\u201d\u00a0are underway to further enhance market access and prices.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
