As of\u00a022 October 2025, more than\u00a015.72 crore rural homes\u00a0are receiving\u00a0safe drinking water through household taps, marking a significant step towards universal water security in rural India. Under the Mission, the Government approved support to States and Union Territories with a central outlay of\u00a0\u20b92,08,652 crores, which has been largely utilised.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>The Mission was launched by\u00a0Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 15 August 2019\u00a0with the vision of providing tap water to every rural household. At that time, only\u00a03.23 crore households (16.71 per cent)\u00a0had access to tap water. Since then,\u00a012.48 crore additional households\u00a0have been connected, marking one of the fastest expansions of basic infrastructure in rural India.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Jal Jeevan Mission also strives to free\u00a0mothers and sisters\u00a0from the centuries-old drudgery of fetching water for their households. It aims to improve their\u00a0health, education, and socio-economic conditions, bringing\u00a0ease of living\u00a0and adding\u00a0pride and dignity\u00a0to rural families.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>The Mission gives equal emphasis to\u00a0sustainability and community participation. It includes\u00a0source sustainability measures\u00a0such as\u00a0recharge and reuse through greywater management, water conservation, and rainwater harvesting. It is implemented through a\u00a0community-based approach, with\u00a0Information, Education and Communication (IEC)\u00a0activities as key components to create awareness and ownership. This is carried out after the water supply department provided the certificate to Gram Panchayat declaring that all households are provided with tap water supply.(<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Quality Assurance and Monitoring<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Under the Jal Jeevan Mission, a robust system for quality assurance and monitoring has been implemented to ensure safe drinking water in rural areas. Their responsibilities include operating the pump, maintaining the system, taking meter readings, collecting water bills, and resolving complaints. The group achieved\u00a0100% water bill collection, stabilising the scheme\u2019s finances and making it self-sustaining. Through efficient management, the SHG\u00a0earned \u20b91,70,000, transforming the group into a\u00a0sustainable income-generating unit\u00a0and a\u00a0model for community-led utility management.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Source Sustainability and Climate Resilience \u2013 Nagaland<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>In Wokha, Nagaland, people are protecting their water sources under the\u00a0Jal Jeevan Mission. Communities in Wokha have realised that protecting catchments is the key to protecting their taps and getting free flow of water for years. With support from JJM and in convergence with the Forest and Soil &amp; Water Conservation Departments, villagers are working hand in hand to revive degraded slopes. Reported cases dropped from\u00a027 in 2022\u201323 to zero within two years, with no deaths reported, after the introduction of piped water and hygiene awareness campaigns. Local leader\u00a0Bindu Devi\u00a0not only donated her land for the water supply scheme but also promoted a sustainable maintenance model, where each household contributes\u00a0\u20b91 per day\u00a0to keep the water system functioning smoothly.\u00a0This approach fostered\u00a0community ownership and responsibility, ensuring the system\u2019s smooth and long-term operation.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Converting Water Scarcity to Water Security \u2013 Rajasthan<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>In Bothara village, a community meeting revealed severe water scarcity and groundwater exploitation exceeding\u00a0103%. This realisation led to the preparation of a\u00a0Water Security Plan\u00a0with a focus on ensuring sustainable drinking water for all households under Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM). During a\u00a0Water Security Committee (WSC)meeting, villagers raised concerns that the new open well built under JJM needed support of effective recharge measures. Without these, the well could still run dry. The\u00a0WSC\u00a0prepared a\u00a0Water Security Plan\u00a0and adopted a\u00a0ridge-to-valley approach. Check dams and contour trenches were built, leading to a\u00a070-foot rise in the water level\u00a0of an open well within ten days of the check dam\u2019s completion. The digital\u00a0Management Information System (MIS)\u00a0platform tracked\u00a013.70 crore community activities (April 2024\u2013August 2025), facilitated\u00a0functionality assessments for 80.39 lakh households across 22,111 villages, and supported the creation of\u00a04,522 Jal Bachao Committees.
