Sohar University (SU) has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with the Indian Institute of Management, Rohtak (IIM Rohtak) to initiate a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program. This agreement was formalized by Prof. Dheeraj Sharma, Director of IIM Rohtak, and Dr. Hamdan Al Fazari, Vice Chancellor of Sohar University, during the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) conference at Sohar University. The event, themed “Elevating Intellectual Property, Research, and Innovation in Oman,” was held under the patronage of H.E. Prof. Rahma Al Mahrouqi, Minister of Higher Education, Research, and Innovation (MoHERI), with His Excellency Amit Narang, Indian Ambassador to Oman, also in attendance.
Prof. Dheeraj Sharma delivered the keynote address at the conference, emphasizing the need to strike a balance between intellectual property protection and open innovation. He encouraged researchers to pursue disruptive innovations that positively impact society, cautioning against investing in superficial innovations that create negative externalities. Prof. Sharma argued that innovation should aim to improve the world rather than merely change people. The event attracted a high-level audience, including top researchers from around the world, WIPO officials, and H.E. Prof. Rahma Al Mahrouqi and H.E. Mr. Amit Narang.
The MoA underscores the significance of this partnership in enhancing business education and research in the region, marking a key milestone in academic collaboration between the two institutions. Sohar University will provide the necessary infrastructure to support the program, though the official start date has yet to be determined.
The BBA program is specifically designed to cater to the large Indian diaspora within 200 kilometers of Sohar University. The program offers an opportunity to deliver high-quality education to this population. Details of the program are being finalized, but the joint degree will offer students a solid foundation in management, finance, operations, and marketing, while focusing on critical thinking, data analysis, and ethical business practices. Graduates will be well-equipped to meet the demands of the global business landscape.
